Frequently Asked Questions

What Are Citations?

Firstly, let’s discuss what citations are. At the very basic level, they’re any mention of your business online. That can be a mention in a newspaper, a link from a blogger, or a listing on a site like Yellow Pages. All of these mentions will show search engines that you are a business that can be trusted.

As a local business, it’s imperative that you build up your citations. Search engines will use location when it comes to customer searches. If a customer were to search for coffee shops, for example, then they’ll bring up the businesses that are local to the customer first. Many customers will specifically searching for a business in their area, so you want to be showing up in those results.

While there’s not 100% clear data on how search engines rank search results, citations are known to be important to the algorithm. With this in mind, you want to ensure you have the best citations online so customers can find you.

How Do You Build Citations?

There are several ways you can build local citations for your business online. Search engines like Google offer their own listing services, like Google My Business. You can claim your business through it, and input all your data to create a citation here. Using Google My Business offers other advantages too, such as reviews and the ability to add pictures and video. If you haven’t already signed up, now is the time to do so.

You can also list your business on other listing sites, so your data is listed there ready to be founds by search engines.

There’s also the option to get mentions elsewhere online, as again this builds trust in your business. On a local level, taking part in events that are covered by local newspapers is always useful. This will get extra links to your business showing up in searches, so you’ll be able to rank higher. You can also team up with bloggers, so they can add links back to you.

Why Are Citations So Important?

So far so good, but just why do you need those citations? Many business owners shy away from it, as they feel it’s catering too hard to a search engine, rather than their customers. While that’s true to a certain extent, you need to remember that most customers will now go to a search engine when they need to find a business. In fact, the majority of the UK have ditched phone books for internet searches instead.

That makes a lot of sense when you think about it. It’s much easier for a potential customer to type in what they want online, rather than go through the phone book looking for what they need. On top of this, they can search for that info wherever they are, thanks to their smartphone.

With this in mind, you need to start updating your citations online. The more citations you have, the more trustworthy you are shown to be as a business. As well as quantity though, you need to have quality.

Most citations should contain a NAP, which is a name, phone number, and address. This is what search engines are going to be looking for. If they are finding different listings for the same business, then they’re going to rank you lower. The same goes for your leads, too. If you have different listings with different phone numbers for example, they’re going to move on to the next business.

The problem is, there are probably many listings out there that you haven’t created yourself. For example, you could be listed on a review site without knowing about it. If the details aren’t matching up, then that’s hurting your SEO without you realising it.

To get the full effect of citations, your best bet is to find all listings of your business, and ensure the info is correct. When it is, you’ll get a boost to your rankings, and show local searchers that you’re a business to be trusted.

Are there different types of Citations?

Now that you know just why citations are so important to your business, you need to consider the different types of citation that can be used in local searches.

Before we get into that, you need to know what information is found in a typical citation. As mentioned before, they should mostly have your NAP included somewhere. As well as this, you can include other information, like your opening hours, pictures, website link, and more.

The two types of citation are structured and unstructured citations between the two. What’s the difference between them?

Structured citations: A structured citation is usually what you’d find in a business directory listing. It will include your NAP, as well as additional information.

Unstructured citations: These are usually mentions of your business’s name. This is what you’ll normally find on blogs or in news articles. In general, an unstructured citation won’t be on a business listing. It can also include other details, like your website address.

What is a Citation clean up?

As a business, you’ll find that there’s plenty of citations out there for you already. However, many of them aren’t going to be correct. That’s going to hurt your SEO so they need to be cleaned up as soon as possible.

To find these citations, search for your business name and phone number in quotation marks, like so:

“Business Name” “(xxx) xxx-xxxx”.

Once you find the details listed, you’ll need to claim any that you didn’t create, and start ensuring that all the details are accurate.

If you’ve ever changed the business’s phone number, you can simply search by business name and look for listings that way.

Claim your business on search engines: As mentioned before, you’ll want to claim your business on all the major search engines. You’ll use Google My Business to do it on Google, for example. Once you do that, you’ll be able to fill out all the relevant information about your business. They will guide you through the process, so fill in as much as you can so your business is claimed and ready to be found.

There are plenty of other places you can claim your business, too. You’ll want to try and claim the name on as many social media sites as possible, with Facebook being the most popular option. That gives customers another place to find and interact with you, so set these accounts up if you haven’t already. Once you have the pages you want to keep them updated. When you do so, search engines are going to see they’re active sites, and so rank you higher. Plus, it’s another excellent avenue for online marketing.

When making structured citations, you’ll want to ensure you’re on all the right listing sites. Most businesses will want to be on general listing sites, like Yelp. Consider where your customers will be looking for you, as a business. For example, if you’re a UK car dealer, you’ll want to be on listing sites like cargurus.co.uk or autotrader.co.uk.

Match up the details: When editing any listings, take care with how you’re listing your information. It may be the correct information across all sources, but it needs to match up exactly to be considered as trustworthy.

For example, say your business is at 100 London Road. On some listings, it’ll be listed at 100 London Road, while others say it’s 100 London Rd. Now, modern search engines can often tell the difference and see that they’re the same address. However, you don’t want to take any chances. Ensure that everything matches up, to be safe.

How do you optimise a Citation?

You’ll see that many sites let you add extra detail. You certainly can just add the bare minimum, but that’s not going to be enough to bring in many leads. Instead, look at adding more detail.

You can add photos, a profile video, opening hours, a description of your business, social media links and more. As above, ensure all these details are matching up with what you have listed on other sites.

You’ll also see many sites, like Google My Business, Yelp and Yell.com offer customers the chance to review you. It’s a very good idea to keep an eye on those reviews, and ensure that you’re replying to them. Engaging with the customer shows that you care about their experience, and will bode well for you in search engine rankings.

Don’t forget that you should reply to negative reviews, too. It’s a chance to show that you want to put things right with them. That’s going to look good both to the reviewer, and anyone else reading the reviews.

How can i check Citations?

We provide a full report of all Citations we have built in your order once its delivered. Outside of this you’ll want to check in on them periodically. Google has a search function  that shows you how many citations you have built and indexed , from there you can go in and check the listings for any incorrect information. You can then make any necessary edits to your existing citations.

Also, ensure that you’re periodically checking for new listings. They can pop up all the time without your knowledge. When that happens, they can actually affect your search engine rankings. You don’t want that to happen, so run the searches again, just as you did when you were setting your citations up. If you find anything new, make the required changes so everything stays consistent.

As you’ve seen here, citations are so much more important than you probably knew. They contain all the vital details about your business, such as your contact details. When they aren’t correct, they hurt your rankings as you don’t appear to be trustworthy. Customers may pass you over too, as you aren’t clear about this important info.

When your citations are correct, and matching on multiple sites, that’s a clear sign that you’re paying attention to the details. When you do so your SEO improves, and that means increased leads for your business.

Start using these tips now to improve your local citations, and start improving your online presence. It’s amazing how quickly you’ll see the results of this work.
